IELTS/TOEFL
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are both widely accepted standardized tests for English proficiency. Here's a brief overview of the syllabus and pattern for each test:
IELTS:
⚫ Sections: IELTS consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
⚫ Listening: This section includes four recorded monologues and conversations. Test-takers listen to a range of accents and write answers to questions.
⚫ Reading: The reading section consists of three long texts that range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical. There are 40 questions in total, designed to test a wide range of reading skills.
⚫ Writing: There are two tasks in the writing section. Task 1 requires candidates to describe, summarize, or explain information presented in a graph, table, chart, or diagram. Task 2 is an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem.
⚫ Speaking: The speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. It is divided into three parts: introduction and interview, long turn, and discussion.
TOEFL:
⚫ Sections: TOEFL consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
⚫ Reading: This section consists of 3-4 reading passages, each followed by 12-14 questions. The passages are academic in nature.
⚫ Listening: Test-takers listen to lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations, followed by questions assessing comprehension.
⚫ Speaking: The speaking section includes six tasks: two independent and four integrated. Test-takers express their opinions on familiar topics and also participate in conversations and discussions.
⚫ Writing: There are two tasks in the writing section. The first task requires candidates to read a passage, listen to a lecture, and then write a response. The second task involves writing an essay in response to a prompt.
In Thailand, both IELTS and TOEFL tests are administered regularly by authorized testing centers. It's essential for test-takers to familiarize themselves with the format of the test they choose to take and to prepare adequately. Many candidates opt for preparation courses or self-study materials to improve their English skills and become familiar with the test format and requirements.
