Shokyu Nihongo Test (Elementary Japanese Proficiency Test)


The Shokyu Nihongo Test (Elementary Japanese Proficiency Test) is actually the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), but at the N5 level, which is the most beginner-friendly level. The JLPT is offered twice a year, in July and December, at testing centers around the world.

The N5 level of the JLPT is designed to assess your ability to understand and use basic Japanese in everyday situations. The syllabus and test format are as follows:

Syllabus:
⚫ Grammar: basic sentence structures, particles, conjugations, polite expressions
⚫ Vocabulary: around 800 common words and phrases
⚫ Reading: understanding short texts such as signs, advertisements, and news articles
⚫ Listening: understanding conversations and announcements

Test format:
Number of questions: 50
⚫ Time limit: 50 minutes

Test sections:
⚫ Vocabulary (25 questions): matching words and phrases to definitions, identifying synonyms and antonyms
⚫ Grammar (25 questions): identifying correct grammatical usage, completing sentences
⚫ Scoring: Each question is worth one point. A score of 60% or higher is considered passing.
