The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) Exam

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). GATE is aimed at assessing the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science.

GATE Exam Pattern:

1. Exam Mode: GATE is a computer-based test (CBT).
2. Duration: The exam is typically conducted for three hours.
3. Number of Papers: GATE is conducted for various engineering disciplines. Candidates can choose one paper according to their field of study.

4. Question Types: The question paper usually consists of two types of questions:
⚫ Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
⚫ Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions

5. Marking Scheme:
⚫ For MCQs: There is negative marking for incorrect answers. One-third of the marks assigned to the question will be deducted for a wrong answer.
⚫ For NATs: There is no negative marking.

GATE Syllabus:
The syllabus for GATE varies depending on the discipline chosen. However, there is a common section known as the General Aptitude (GA) section, which is mandatory for all papers.

1. General Aptitude (GA):
⚫ Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups, instructions, and critical reasoning.
⚫ Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, and data interpretation.

2. Engineering Mathematics (for all papers):
⚫ Linear Algebra
⚫ Calculus
⚫ Differential Equations
⚫ Complex Variables
⚫ Probability and Statistics
⚫ Numerical Methods

3. Core Subject Syllabus:
⚫ Each discipline has its own set of core subjects. For example, if you are appearing for the Computer Science and Information Technology paper, the syllabus will include subjects like Algorithms, Data Structures, Computer Networks, etc.

Candidates should refer to the official GATE website for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
