Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam


The Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination in India is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. It is very important exam in India. Syllabus and pattern is given below.

CDS Exam Pattern:

The CDS examination consists of three stages:

Written Examination:
⚫ Objective Type Questions
⚫ Time Duration: 2 hours for each paper
⚫ Negative Marking: 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question for incorrect answers

Interview/Personality Test:
⚫ Candidates who qualify the written examination are called for an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB).

Medical Examination:
⚫ Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a medical examination.

CDS Written Exam Syllabus:

The written exam comprises three papers:

CDS Paper I: English (Maximum Marks - 100)
⚫ Topics may include comprehension, antonyms, synonyms, grammar, vocabulary, etc.

CDS Paper II: General Knowledge (Maximum Marks - 100)
⚫ The General Knowledge paper includes questions from current affairs, geography, history, science, and other topics of general interest.

CDS Paper III: Elementary Mathematics (Maximum Marks - 100)
⚫ Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, Statistics, etc.

CDS OTA (Officers' Training Academy) Exam Pattern:

For candidates applying for OTA, there are only two papers in the written examination:
⚫ OTA Paper I: English (Maximum Marks - 100)
⚫ OTA Paper II: General Knowledge (Maximum Marks - 100)

SSB Interview:
Candidates who qualify in the written examination are called for the SSB interview, which includes various tests such as the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests, Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP & DT), Psychological Tests, Group Testing Officers (GTO) tasks, and Interview.

Medical Examination:
Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a thorough medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards required for military service.
